The United States has removed key restrictions on Ukraine’s use of American-supplied weapons, even as reports emerge of North Korean forces mobilizing to support Russia in areas near Ukraine. Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh confirmed that approximately 10,000 North Korean soldiers are now stationed in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, a region near the active front lines.
The Pentagon’s decision comes after NATO verified that North Korean troops are indeed being deployed to assist Russian efforts in the region, where Ukrainian forces have pressed for territorial gains. President Joe Biden described North Korea’s direct involvement as “a perilous” development, noting the potential implications of an expanding network of allies in the conflict. Until now, U.S. policy restricted Ukraine from using American-made weaponry for any strikes deep within Russian territory; however, Washington’s updated stance reflects its intention to stand firmly with Ukraine amid rising threats from Russia’s alliance with North Korea.
According to reports, North Korea’s military deployment includes a specialized unit of 500 officers and three generals, marking Pyongyang’s significant involvement in Russia’s regional defense. For months, speculation surrounded the possibility of North Korean support, with initial denials from both Russia and North Korea. However, as intelligence reports surfaced, both nations offered limited responses, hinting at a shifting alliance structure. Ukrainian military sources suggest North Korean soldiers could begin engaging directly in combat as soon as October 27.
In response, the United States has recently committed to supporting Ukraine’s development of its long-range capabilities, as highlighted in an $800 million aid package announced last week. This assistance strengthens Ukraine’s defenses as it faces a new, bolstered front with North Korean forces.
