After the attempted assassination, I believe liberals went, maybe, 12 hours without uttering those apocalyptic words. After all, the leading platform Democrats are campaigning on is saving us all from the threat to democracy known as Donald J. Trump. They say it a lot. I mean, they say it a lot. It is their main talking point and the crux of their campaign.
There are a few problems, however. First and foremost, Trump has already been president, and the elements of democracy we enjoy in our constitutional republic never went away.
In my state of North Carolina, threats to democracy, like not requiring any ID to vote, were put in place by Democrats, not Trump. Not having a secure election is a threat to democracy. Thankfully, this ridiculous law was removed. Hint: it wasn’t Democrats concerned about threats to democracy that overturned it.
When election laws such as requiring a proper signature on mail-in ballots were rewritten or ignored, this was done by Democrats, not Trump. Again, not having a secure election is a threat to democracy. It was democrats who had a political candidate removed from ballots, thus eliminating the choice of voters. This happened in many states. You don’t do that if you care about democracy. This was one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen.
As you probably know, we’ve had a massive amount of illegal immigration over the last three years. It’s Democrats and only Democrats who want illegals counted in the census as regular citizens. How is this a threat to democracy? Well, those numbers will be used for redistricting and congressional representation. It’s rigging the system and stomping on democracy.
Putting a political opponent in jail doesn’t precisely scream democracy. It makes me think of Russia or a third-world banana republic, not America. While campaigning for elected positions in the judicial system, the various people bringing charges against Trump said they would. They campaigned on that promise. It wasn’t about justice; it was 100% about the person. They campaigned on the promise that, if elected, they would go after Trump. Amazing!
Threat to democracy is a focus group-tested term. It tested well, so it’s used. It’s not a real issue; it’s fear-mongering, but that doesn’t matter. When you’re not going to win on crime, the border, foreign policy, or the economy, you need to fearmonger. It would be best if you had a boogeyman, and that boogeyman is Donald J. Trump and his being a threat to democracy.
Ultimately, to me, it’s comically crazy that the people spewing “threats to democracy” are the same people shamelessly doing anything they can to obtain power. Democrats have perpetrated every actual threat to democracy.
